Because Black women are the blueprint.
"As Black women, we want to be safe, we want to be able to control our narratives and our lives. This brand for us isn't just popularity. It's so we can have the freedom to be our absolute selves and create how we want to create, tell our story how we want to tell our story, and live how we want to live - and be an avenue for other people to do the same. UN|POPULAR CULTURE - NOV 2020

The brand, appropriately named Sadé & Shaniya, sets itself apart by aligning itself with themes that run much deeper than fashion and personal style. In their latest collection, Looking Glass: The Capsule, the designer duo incorporated themes of perception and self-reflection utilizing soft colors that recall feelings of growth and tranquility. Drawing inspiration from the “House of Mirrors” and the women surrounding them, the capsule is composed of textiles that would bounce off light and create movement in the body. “While the textiles we choose are not overtly reflective, we wanted the textiles to embody the qualities of each woman we envisioned: buoyant, soft but yet solid,” explains co-designer and co-founder, Shaniya Charles. “The luxe velvets, corduroys, hammered textured silks, flowing pleats, and moiré seen throughout very much reflects the qualities of the women we know and love dearly.”

We decided to go for a mixed reality approach – blending 3D, AR, and physical. It pays respects to our upbringing and the future of fashion.”

L+A: What made you want to start your own label?
Shaniya - Starting a brand didn’t really click until we were in college; and with the background we have in design and marketing, it pretty just came naturally. Additionally between both of our majors in Marketing and Production, we had a really good balance to create our own clothing company.
Sadé - We also participated in the black student union fashion show and created our own collection. From then on, we just decided to keep moving forward with it.
